The Why, What & How of 'Walking to Zero'

June 9, 2025

LUBS WtZ 24 workshop 'crew.'

Walking to Zero 'training to see' workshops

Why

  • Carbon footprints are 'zero'
  • The most invigorating way of connecting with a locations' physical and community landscapes
  • A cheaper and more enjoyable method of keeping physically and mentally fit than going to the gym
  • The best social engagement technology
  • Participants develop intimate relationships with their walks landscapes, they create new skills in observing and recording.

What

  • We initiate and implement 'Walking to Zero' workshops.
  • The workshops focus on enhancing the participants' visual, audio and tactile receptiveness to better connect to the landscapes of their walks.
  • The walkers' engagement with and knowledge of their walk's physical and community landscapes transforms the walker's experience from the mundane and tedious to the invigorating and memorable.
  • Our programmes are focussed on persuading those who choose not to walk that walking is far more engaging and enjoyable than any other form of mobility.

How

  • The Walking to Zero workshops use techniques that train the participants 'seeing and hearing' to more clearly focus on the landscapes they walk through.
  • Project participants are trained to create narratives that describe their 'seeing of an aspect of the walks landscapes' through utilising a variety of observational methodologies, such as learning to photograph, sketch, and to write, using poetry and prose.

Outcomes

  • 'Walking to Zero'  exhibitions display the 'seeing' of the participants to public and invited audiences.
  • The exhibitions are designed to be portable and previous venues have included fine art and photographic galleries as well as public spaces and educational institutions.
  • Not only do the participants develop intimate relationships with their walks landscapes, they create new skills in observing and recording.
